Science at Key Stage 5

We run 3 separate science courses at Key Stage 5. The BTEC Level 3 Applied Science course is an established course which has been extended this year to be worth 1.5 A Levels.  In the past it has achieved excellent results- 66% Distinction */Distinction  in 2019. The course consists of 6 units, 2 of which are externally assessed exams worth 41%, whilst 59% of the assessment is assignment based covering a wide range of chemical practical techniques and genetics.

A level Biology attracts growing numbers and has improving results - 100% of the A level biologists passed their A level in 2019. The course involved practical work in and outside the science laboratory. Similarly to Key Stage 3 and 4.  A level Biology  follows the AQA Kerboodle scheme of work. A Level Chemistry has been run for 3 years at the Beaconsfield School. Numbers of students and results have improved each year.

All three Science courses involve plenty of practical work with all practical skills assessed throughout the two years for the A Level subjects, or as an externally assessed practical unit for the BTEC . The courses are all expanding rapidly whilst still keeping very encouraging teacher student ratios.

All Key Stage 5 Science course are taught in five 50 minute lessons a week.
